What is important to remember before you leave?
When taking the dog on holiday, there are some rules you must be aware of before departure.
- Dogs must have an EU dog passport issued by a veterinarian
- Dogs must be ID tagged with an electronic microchip or have a clearly legible tattoo/ear tag from before 3 July 2011
- Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies no later than 21 days before departure
- Italy and Germany do not allow potentially dangerous dog breeds such as Pitbull, Terrier and Mastiff
- Dogs must always be kept on a lead, unless otherwise specified
- Dogs must be muzzled in public places and in densely packed areas
Can the dog tolerate the heat in Italy?
Consider whether your dog can tolerate the heat when you go on holiday with your dog. Temperatures in Italy can get very high. Many dogs, especially dogs with thick fur, can find it difficult to cope with the massive heat. Therefore, in some cases it may be better to find a nice boarding house for the dog in Denmark instead, even if you will miss your four-legged family member.
Never leave the dog in the car
Would you leave your dog in a sauna? No, of course not. Due to the high temperatures in Italy, the temperature in a parked car rises very quickly to around 70 degrees and is fatal for dogs. Therefore, remember to take the dog out of the car if you go on holiday with a dog in Italy.
Rules for dogs on Italian beaches
On most public beaches in Italy, it is not a good idea to take your pet with you, especially in the tourist areas. It is therefore important to check which Italian beaches dogs are welcome on, so that you still have the opportunity to take your dog out for a swim in the beautiful Italian bathing water.
Transport of dog to Italy
When you go on holiday with a dog in Italy, there are several options for bringing the dog along. You can go on a self-drive holiday and take the dog with you in the car, but there is also the option of taking the dog with you on the plane.
Most airlines allow both small and large dogs to come on the plane. The large dogs are transported in special cages in an air-conditioned section of the hold. The ticket must be ordered by contacting the airline. Small dogs weighing up to 8 kg can be kept in the cabin, and here a ticket must also be booked in advance. The dog must be transported in an approved transport crate and it must remain in the transport crate throughout the flight.
